The feud between 100% cotton and 50/50 cotton blends with polyester has been since the era of blends came on the rise. The people who have used cotton all their life swear by it for all the reasons they deem correct. While the people who walk with the trend feel like blends are the best overall.
But, we are not here to pick sides but to tell you facts about these materials and how they affect the overall feel of the cloth, its look and maintenance. So let’s get started.
1. 100% Cotton:
i. Feel:
Fabrics made of 100% cotton are highly varied, with different weaves and thread counts comes different varieties of fabrics. But, usually, all these are very breathable. Depending on its weave its weight differs. People who love to wear cotton or choose cotton over blends is probably because it is soft. Since it is breathable and soft, it is also hypoallergenic. That means, it’s best for people with sensitive skin. You might see old men sporting 100% cotton shirts as it is the best material for their sensitive skin.
ii. Look:
People who wear 100% cotton shirts look richer. Different weaves give a different appearance. For instance, Poplin looks crisp but is see-through because it is comparatively thinner than other weaves and its light too. So it doesn’t have a natural fall but a specific shape it adheres to. Whereas, Twill weave is a little heavier and has a good fall of its own. So, choose the look you are looking for and then the weave to suit your look.
iii. Maintenance:

2. 50/50 Cotton – Polyester blend:
i. Feel:
You get the best of both, it’s slightly breathable, but not as breathable as cotton so if you sweat, it will stick to you. It’s soft, but, not well suited for sensitive skin and can cause rashes. It withholds athletic sweating better than cotton which can get heavy once wet. So if you are going to be outdoors doing physical activities, the blend is a better option.
ii. Look:
It is cheaper than 100% cotton shirts and is not meant for business wear. It is meant for casual weak where you need a good stretch space so that you can freely move your body. It doesn’t have a lot of variety in weaves and may have a monotone look and solid colours.
iii. Maintenance:
It’s easier to maintain as it doesn’t shrink when washed and is stretchable enough to fit you longer. It also is good for people into physical activity as it is sturdier than cotton with a thinner weave. Washing can be done normally and doesn’t need ironing as it doesn’t wrinkle that much.
